- When you balance chemical equations a coefficient is put in front of products and reactants until the number of atoms of an element on the left of a chemical equation equals the number of atoms of the element on the right. This strategy for balancing chemical equations obeys the Law of Conservation of Mass. Coefficients are whole numbers and are usually not written if the value is 1. The coefficients describe the smallest whole-number ratio of reactants and products.
